It Is All About The Base Preparation
Whenever we get called in to do an interlock repair the cause is almost always the same: the gravel base. This part of a patio or driveway that no one sees is crucial to the longevity of the project.

Most interlock driveways and patios we see that have heaved or settled or got weed problems are a result of stone dust (limestone screenings) being used as the only base material. The stone dust does not protect the paving surface from frost heave and settling over time. Stone dust does not drain well and holds water against the paving stones. This can cause efflorescence (white chalky residue on the surface) and lead to premature stone failure due to de-icing salt getting trapped under the stone.
So, for your next interlock patio or driveway project, make sure the base is not stone dust and be certain that whoever is doing your project uses the proper base preparation and you will be free to enjoy your new interlock patio for years to come.
Our Base Preparation for Driveways/ Patios/Walkway
Since 2018, we’ve been using clear stone base (New method) instead of a conventional base on almost all of our projects AND we’ve never used Stone Dust as a base or bedding layer. Another important parts of a quality base are the use of geotextile fabric and geogrid.
Clear stone base had many benefits:
-
It is much closer to final compaction as soon as it is dumped into the excavated area therefore requiring less compaction to consolidate the stone.
-
It has greater frost heave protection due to the fact that there is no water being held in the base gravel (if installed correctly).
-
Permeable interlock driveways or patios can be achieved by using a permeable jointing sand or gravel.
-
Pavers are better protected from salt damage because salt is not being held in close proximity to the bottom of the stone.
